Beginning in 2018 clears Huawei surprises with the P Smart, a budgettoestel with striking good hardware. The Huawei P Smart Plus offers better hardware but also costs almost twice as much. Is the price still as sharp as we would like?

With the P Smart put the manufacturer’s new figurehead for price-quality ratio in 2018. Huawei showed that you for a mere 200 euros a smartphone could get with dual cameras, great screen, smooth hardware and finger print scanner. In our review we called the device “now all of the best budgetsmartphone of 2018”. However, since then it has some strong competitors appeared, including the Nokia 6 (2018), Motorola Moto G6 and Huawei’s own P20 Lite.

Huawei now comes with a new device, the P Smart Plus. With a suggested retail price of 349 euros, he is still a lot more expensive than other models, but there are also a number of solid upgrades across. The device has a larger screen, improved hardware, more storage space, double selfiecamera and newer version of Android. Is that enough to re-lot to make an impression? You read about it in this Huawei P Smart Plus review.

Design

The Huawei P Smart Plus is one of the most beautiful smartphones I this year have seen. The design is know in almost every respect, with the most expensive devices of the moment to measure. The P Smart Plus has a voorkantvullend screen, similar to the Huawei P20 Pro or OnePlus 6. The notch at the top of the image is slightly larger than on those devices, but the P Smart Plus has a dual selfiecamera.

Although the P Smart Plus a large screen has, he feels fairly manageable. By the small screen borders have Huawei the phone compact. Everything is nicely finished, including a shiny back and solid housing. If you are on the back tap, that sounds just what holler and cheaper than on the glass Huawei P20 Pro, but otherwise they are hardly distinguishable from each other. That Huawei succeed in such a high-quality design for a lower price to offer, is commendable.

The design even has a few advantages compared to the P20 Pro. For example, the P Smart Plus a headphone jack, which the flagship is missing. Also is the finger print scanner is not under the screen, but back. That is a lot easier to achieve if you have the device with one hand. Moreover, the scanner good: he recognized my finger almost instantly.

Hardware and finger print scanner

Huawei has the P Smart Plus something more powerful than the other budgetsmartphones of the company. It is the first device with the new Kirin 710-chip, by Huawei self-developed. According to the manufacturer, this up to 70 percent faster than the chip in the regular P Smart. Now, we had little to complain about with the performance of that device, but the P Smart Plus, everything is completely flawless. Apps start up fast, run without gehaper and switching between applications is also smooth.

There is also a 64GB of storage available, of which about 50GB is available to users. That is probably more than enough for all your apps, games, photos and music. If you still need more space, then the P Smart Plus still room for a micro-sd memory card.

Software

The P Smart Plus features of EMUI, Huawei’s own Android skin. That’s why the menus and the homescreen look pretty different from the standard version of Android. We find it to be a little messy on the eye, but tastes may differ. By default, there is some bloatware on the P Smart (among other things, eBay and games like Dragon Mania), but you can happily remove all of them. It is not the most beautiful Android interface, but the last few years definitely improved.

Huawei also has a clear update policy. Any smartphone with a suggested retail price of more than 299 euros, including so this P Smart Plus, get a monthly security update. That Google released, and provide protection against vulnerabilities in the software. Also get the device to update to Android 9.0, probably somewhere at the end of this year or early next year. The manufacturer promises up to two years after the release support, which means that you have to at least August 2020, is well protected.

Camera

On the back you will find next to the primary 16-megapixel camera, a secondary 2 megapixel camera. Extra lens depth, giving your photos a bokeh effect. This is the background blurred made, and everything in the foreground just a bit sharper. A similar effect can be found on Huawei’s more expensive smartphones, such as the P20.

Better pictures by artificial intelligence

In addition, Huawei artificial intelligence to your photos to improve. The device applies object recognition to automatically change the settings. You make for example a kattenfoto, then the P Smart Plus ready to move fast to capture. Also for night shots, documents, and more adjustments will be made. This AI option you can turn on or off in the camera app, even after you take a picture already created. So I let him, by default, always on; even if the object recognition does not work correctly, you can get the adjustments after the rollback.

Generally take the artificial intelligence. Photos are beautifully lit, colour-fast and pretty sharp. If you are quite zoomed in, you can see that there is some detail missing compared to the more expensive Huawei P20 Pro, but for social media or taking photos to share with your friends, the picture is excellent.

Also front you’ll find a dual camera, 24 2 megapixel. The secondary ensures that the bokeh effect can apply to your selfies. That effect works well, but the front-facing camera, unfortunately something less. Photos look duller. They are also even with minimal movement soon blurred.

The above comparison shows the left, a selfie made with the P Smart Plus, and the right one with the P20 Pro. At the cheaper device is the image directly in a lot less colorful and vibrant. It is a great camera for this price range, but for the best selfies you need to have possible to collect more coupons.

Battery life

The Huawei P Smart Plus has a battery capacity of 3340 mAh, slightly larger than the 3000 mAh battery in the P Smart. Because the Plus have a larger screen, the battery life is not very different. Usually I could the device free of trouble a (busy) day use without recharge.

Especially on standby is the device very economical. In a slightly quieter weekend, there is therefore good two days without charging the device. Unfortunately, the P Smart Plus no support for fast charging. It takes at least a hour or three before the battery is full. Also the device has a micro-usb connector, and that can in this price range is really not more.

Alternatives

Huawei launches the P Smart Plus with a suggested retail price of 349 euro, but history teaches us that the company prices will soon lower. The Huawei P Smart took to his release is still 249 euro but is now virtually all for 180 euro. It would not surprise us if the P Smart Plus, even before the end of the year under the 300 euro ones.

Nevertheless, it is 349 euros, still a very good price. The P Smart Plus therefore lies in the same waters as, for example, the Nokia 7 Plus. This is a device that has comparable hardware, and in addition, you can in to Nokia count on fast, monthly (security)updates. Although the 7 Plus is also a dual camera on the back, is the camera of the P Smart Plus really a little bit better.

Another alternative is the Samsung Galaxy A8. That has no dual camera on the back, but front. Also in terms of design Samsung something down. The device has a voorkantvullend, borderless screen, without notch, similar to the Galaxy S9. However, the A8 is not as powerful as the P Smart Plus and also less storage space.

Conclusion Huawei P Smart Plus review

Huawei is now the king of the cheap smartphones, and the P Smart Plus let that is very good to see. This unit costs half of what you do for a flagship pay, but doing in terms of design, power and features hardly under for that competition. Even the camera delivers beautiful shots, thanks to the dual lenses on both sides.

Because of the higher price is the P Smart Plus a slightly less impressive performance than the P Smart. The device clears the maximum from a minimum price, to squeeze, while the Plus is still, however, a clear little bit more expensive. However, it is a worthy upgrade compared to the regular P Smart, especially if the price in the coming months what drops.
