Galaxy J4 Plus and J6 Plus preview: cheap Samsung smartphones

Samsung Galaxy J6 Plus preview: cheap but decent...

Cheap smartphones from Samsung, we saw the last time still but rarely. Yet the company has still plenty to offer, with big screens, dual cameras and more. Whether that was a good extract, you’ll read about in this Galaxy J6 Plus preview.

Samsung Galaxy J6 Plus preview: cheap but decent

Samsung has the budgetmarkt the past year and a bit to the left, but with the Galaxy J4 Plus and J6 Plus hopes the manufacturer the hearts of bargain hunters to recapture. That is quite a challenge: Huawei, Nokia, and Motorola all offer good smartphones for little money. The new two have to be distinguished with a large screen, and sleek design, but will that be enough?

The Galaxy J-series is not equipped with an amoled screen, as we usually come to expect from Samsung, but with ips-lcd image. This image technology is a little less bright and colorful than amoled. You put the Galaxy J6 Plus, for example, next to the Galaxy A7 (2018), then it looks the picture is much less vibrant.

The brightness of the screen is always a bit disappointing. For example, the maximum brightness of the J6 Plus similar to the brightness of the A7 halfway. In the sun the screen is usually readable, though it is not ideal. In addition it seemed the brightness in some previewexemplaren that I tried even less, though it is possible to have pre-production models. In any case, something to keep an eye out.

Camera: ‘Live-Focus’ is a truucje, but works

On the back you will find a dual camera of 13 and 5 megapixel. That makes the “Live Focus” mode, which, in fact, simply a bokeh effect. The background will get a slight blur, which makes the person or object in the foreground could be better out.

Ideally it does not work with these cheaper cameras. In making the photo looks like the filter in a hurry software is applied. The half of the image is automatically blurred, whatever is on the screen. Somewhere in the middle is the image still sharp, because the face usually in the middle. Or the second camera there really much to add, is not quite clear to me.

The photos that you see in these pictures, look fine for Instagram or other social media. Thanks to the effect eyes, the portraits just a little more vivid. Zoom, however, not too much, because then it is very good that the J6 Plus a cheaper smartphone. Half of my hair was swallowed up by the blur, and my right ear was by the J6 Plus also blurred and the background is pushed.

Create your ‘normal’ photos, they look quite good in situations with sufficient light. It is about what you think of this review: the image looks colour-fast and reasonably sharp. You don’t need too much zooming in on the details, but it can be through with it. Indoor photos, or other low-light situations, less good. The few photos that I shot, were soon blurred.

Finger print scanner on the side

With the Galaxy J6 Plus, Samsung has the finger print scanner for the first time, not front or rear mounted, but used in the power button on the side. As a left-hander that placement is not ideal: you still have a little more maneuvering to get your fingers on. The recognition itself seems just as smooth as with other Samsung devices.

The unit itself feels thin and sturdy, but a bit cheap. The back is clear plastic and feels a little less luxurious than, for example, the Motorola Moto G6. Be nice to have the different colors especially the bright red variety is remarkably good.

Conclusion: good, but not the best choice

All in all, there continues to be a device where you don’t bump to will fall, but also not really makes an impression. Nokia has come up with quick updates, Motorola has great battery, Huawei stops dual cameras on both sides, but the J6 Plus has no real distinctive features.

Samsung seems to secretly especially a bit on their own brand recognition to lean on. Consumers who are looking for a cheap device come probably mainly from the J6 Plus because they have the Samsung name to recognize, not because the device eye-catching features. Da’s not bad at all: the J6 Plus is a great unit without major flaws. But the best choice in a field with strong alternatives, it is absolutely not.

Galaxy J4 preview: cheaper, but less

Then there is the Galaxy J4, with a suggested retail price of 189 euros has just what cheap is. It is long ago that Samsung is such a cheap device has released. At first glance, the differences between the two devices at least. They have the same screen size, same chipset and same battery.

The big difference is on the back. There you will find only a single 13 megapixel camera. Therefore, this smartphone is not a “Live Focus” mode. The photo quality seems to continue unchanged. The selfiecamera is unfortunately less: not 8, but 5 megapixel. A big difference in my selfies I noticed, however, not directly.

Interestingly enough, there is also the finger print scanner on this model. Although Samsung in other countries a J4 Plus with finger print scanner sells, we get in the Netherlands a variant without. We don’t know why, but probably to keep costs as low as possible. A pity, because even in this price range is a finger print scanner now pretty standard.

This would lead to the Galaxy J4 Plus actually discourage. It is in itself a great device, but if you are still a cheap Samsung wants, then you better have a few real to pay more for the J6 Plus. The price difference is so small, and for the additional camera and finger print scanner large enough, we it possible to collect more coupons is worth.
